Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are an increasing public health burden. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is responsible for the structural integrity of the aortic wall. In preliminary experimental work on this, we have already demonstrated the potential of molecular imaging. In this project, molecular / biophysical MRI will be evaluated to characterise the ECM in the AAA mouse model. The most promising molecular MR probes and elastography techniques - or the combination of both - for improved assessment of the risk of progression/rupture of AAAs, will be identified.
